Abstract

War, a ubiquitous activity in the history of human societies, is a practice whose study has been limited in the realm of the social sciences until recently. In this paper a brief theoretical introduction to the anthropological-archaeological approach for the analysis of this phenomenon is presented using two case studies within historical archaeology: the battles of Cepeda (1859) and La Verde (1874), province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Research carried out in this type of sites is of special interest for the analysis of the materiality and spatiality of warfare, tactics and strategies implemented by different actors, as well as the current conflicts arising from the commemoration and memorialization of battles.
