Abstract

This paper introduces the work of Wáx, an interdisciplinary research group combining linguistics sources’ declassification, digitalization of historical documents, aerial image and georeferencing. Text discusses two obstacles found during the development of Wáx: ethnic classification and southern geography. Assisted by an optical character recognition software, we track a variety of ethnic names on a corpus of documents going from the mid 17th century to present. Results are arranged as three enunciation contexts. We discuss the geopolitical frame transmitted by Tehuelche ethnological classification to archaeology, linguistics and historiography. Finally, we set some research challenges for the future.
