Abstract

The intent with this paper is to make an historiographic evaluation of the subtle but complex ways that led to a recreation of ethnic identities both in Chiapas and Guatemala by means of military recruitment and mobilizations. The lapse 1821-1870 was chosen as a temporal framework because it was a period with the most military conflicts and, above all, because at that time the first steps towards Republican experimentation were taken in face of the colonial management in handling ethnical diversity.
