Abstract

This article analyzes the reaction of the dominant forces of Latin America to the advance of the social movements and leftist organizations at the end of the last century and the beginning of the present, which even conquered political power in several countries, establishing progressive governments. The social reality in the region underwent significant changes. These events, however, could not be reiterated and consolidated without provoking a response from transnational corporations and local right-wing oligarchies whose interests were seriously affected. The counter-offensive they undertook is varied and novel in form and content, with radical goals that can be accompanied by both social-democratic poses and neofascist populisms, that the left must face.
