Scientific contribution of five Mexican engineers of the 19th century to the national geology
Main Article Content
Abstract
The development of geological sciences in Mexico in the 19th century is key to understanding the national scientific evolution. At that time, the country was in a process of civil and cultural adaptation after a warlike independence movement where ir required its own scientific identity. The goverment and academic organizations of the time gave a strong impulse to the development of sciences with rather utilitarian purposes, an example being the case of geological sciences that emerged as part of the country's economic development projects, such as mining, and the knowledge and study of the national territory at a geological and geographic level. During this period, importante men of science emerged whose scientific work is of importance for the evolution of geology in Mexico, this research particularly addresing the study of the scientific production of five mexican engineers who contributed basic elements for the development of this science in or country. These are: Antonio del Castillo Patiño, Santiago Ramírez Palacios, Mariano Santiago de Jesús de la Bárcena Ramos, José Guadalupe Aguilera Serrano and Ezequiel Ordoñez Aguilar. The impact and visibility of their scientific work can be verified through the use of bibliometric-historical indicators in an analysis of the trends of the time, being also a scientific work that is still used by researchers for the historical analysis of geology. In this case, various sources were consulted for metric studies of science, also carrying out a search in Google Scholar for the citations that the works published by these 5 engineers have received, with the aim of verifying what impact and scientific influence their production has had written about later generations of geological scientists.
