Abstract

In the western world animals increasingly are considered to be quasi-human, and
are treated by their owners as family members. The Judeo-Christian tradition for a long
time has endowed non-human animals with spiritual qualities, but the growing conceptual
equivalence between humans and animals has fostered the belief that animals possess souls

and that that they will be reunited with their owners in heaven. Evidence for this proposi-
tion derives from various sources of information, including the remarkable case of grave-
stone inscriptions found in pet cemeteries in United States and France.
