Abstract

During last decades Cumanagoto people (an indigenous society of Anzoátegui State, Northeast Venezuela) have experimented a complex ethnogenesis process. As part of that, Cumanagoto people as a whole have made efforts for reconstructing their ethnic identity and recuperating some of their cultural resources and the language. That language, classified into Carib stock, is currently extinct. It could be a dialectal variety of an ancient macrolanguage, called Northern Carib. This paper discusses the ethnogenesis processes among Cumanagoto people making emphasis in the attempt of Cumanagoto people for recuperating their ancient language.
