With your back to the water: notes for historical anthropology of the desiccation of the Basin of Mexico
Main Article Content
Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to explore from a historical and anthropological perspective the progressive desiccation of the Basin of Mexico. By examining colonial policies of water management in Mexico City, it provides evidence on how a view that simplified the ecological complexity and disregarded indigenous understandings on water bodies became dominant. The article brings light to the continuities between colonial and present-day water policies, while it draws attention to the links between water management and social inequality in the Basin of Mexico.
