Abstract

Taking into consideration the political condition of Puerto Rico in relation to Latin
America and its position within the modern/colonial world-system, the following article is
to reflect on the theoretical and methodological challenges that faces the production of
ethnography today. The anthropological production in the island, in addition to being subject to the center-periphery dichotomy, has been used as a colonial tool. To overcome these
constraints, and addressing the current theoretical debate proposed by the Modernity/Coloniality/Decoloniality project from de Social Sciences, the use of a “native”
ethnography in Puerto Rico will contribute to the interrogation of the naturalized realities
and the identification of (de)colonial aspects that the production of knowledge will imply.
